EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Part of a head coachs many roles is to build relationships with his players.Some coaches are succe sful at that, while others not so much so. Understandably, its a tricky proposition as people are different, and what Shaquille O’Neal Jersey works with one individual might not work with another.Giants head coach Brian Daboll knows this very well. In his effort to build a relationship with receiver Kadarius Toney, who is coming off a nightmarish rookie season and an off-season in which he had to rehab from knee surgery and be the subject of trade rumors, Daboll looked for a common ground with the receiver.That ground is music, the universal language. Daboll, who is a big rap and country music fan, made sure to include some of Toneys musicthe receiver goes by the stage name Yung Joka–into the daily practice playlist. Hes a good person. He cares about his teammates. And we have good communication, him and I, Daboll said of Toney. He likes football. He likes music. I think hes a very loyal, a loyal guy. And you got to build trust with KT, and he had to build trust with me. Really no different than a lot of guys.Toney might have easily irked Daboll back in the spring when he skipped out on the start of the voluntary off-season conditioning program. But Daboll insisted that he wasnt bothered by the second-year receivers decision, adding that the two of them had productive conversations.Trust is probably one of the most important things in any relationship you can build. Ive told you from Day 1 Ive been very happy with KT, his approach, how he is as a person, first and foremost, because thats what matters to me. Weve seen him in college. We evaluated him. He has a tremendous skill set. Hes smart. We move him around quite a bit. Hes a good young player that were going to help develop anyway we can both on and off the field.Toney, whom Daboll said sends him some of his songs, admitted he was pleasantly surprised when one of the tunes made it into the playlist. I think thats pretty great; Im not going to lie, he said. It had me juiced up. I appreciate them for doing it because it shows the willingne s to build a relationship with me. (But) I need to focus right now. Im focused on ball right now.So far, so good, as Toney and teammate WanDale Robinson are already showing just how important he’ll be to this offense. Both have made plays catching the ball in the intermediate (10-15 yard) range and have been turning those plays into big gainers. That should go a long way toward getting a stagnant Giants offense back on track.Injury ReportNo change to the PUP list (receiver Sterling Shepard, center Nick Gates and tackle Matt Peart) or NFI (outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari). Ojulari, who is week to week, was spotted doing some work on a nearby field with a trainer watching.Starting center Jon Feliciano was held out of practice due to the aftereffects of Thursdays brutally hot and humid day. Jamil Douglas and Max Garcia took reps at center in Felicianos absence. Unfortunately, for the Giants, snapping the ball was an adventure, as at least three of the snaps were poor (including one during a walk-through scenario).Not only was the snapping not as crisp, Jamaal Wilkes Jersey but there were probably a few too many jailbreaks by the defense in getting into the backfield at the snap. To be fair, though, its hard to tell for sure if the jailbreaks were legit or a result of the team still being in the acclimation period where contact is still not allowed. Still, it did seem like different members of the defense were living in the Giants offensive backfield a little too often on the day.Inside linebacker Blake Martinez, who had a slight increase in his workload Thursday, had his reps reduced on Friday, though its unclear if that was because the Giants went to a lot of their dime package or if it had to do with his ongoing rehab from a torn ACL. Dabolls Training Camp Practice PlanScroll to ContinueThe Giants opened training camp focused on the red zone. On Day 2, they focused on third and short, and then on Day 3, it was third-and-long. That sequence so far caused one to wonder if the Giants chose to open camp with that sequence since the red zone and third-down conversions were so bad for the Giants last year. Here is his response. Its areas you need to work on. Red zone is a really important area in terms of scoring the football and then stopping and creating field goals–an area we definitely need to work on. It also helps players coming back from being down 30, 40 days of working in the offseason. And youre not running 20 go routes or covering posts or deep cro sers and things like that. And then usually on like a third James Worthy Jersey and two-to-five day, its a lot shorter routes, too. Youre running routes at the sticks, or youre running shallow cro sers, things like that. So, some of the running in the ramp-up period helps those guys. Today itll be a little bit longer. Again, trying to put players in stre sful situations in practice is important. Thats why you practice. You learn from it, and you move on. You see if you can fix the things you need to fix. So thats kind of what were doing. Id say the next day is kind of the fringe area in that area and then we got a day off. Then well start with pads. That will be a first and second down day where we can kind of get after it in the running game and really start playing real football if you will. Practice ObservationsAs previously noted, there were a few adventures with snapping the ball while Jon Feliciano sidelined. While I counted just three really bad snaps (including one in which there wasnt even a defender lined up acro s from the offense), thats still three too many in my estimation, as all it takes is one aborted snap to give the defense a turnover. Im also not sure if it was because Feliciano was mi sing or if its because with camps still being in acclimation mode and thus not allowing contact, the offensive linemen cant get as physical as they need to be against the pa s rush.Whatever the reason, I thought there was Lonzo Ball Jersey far too much pre sure on the quarterbacks in this practice. I counted at least four instances where there should have been sacks and a handful of others where the quarterback was moved off his mark. Im developing an appreciation for Matt Breida and how he runs. Breida does a nice job of deciding where hes going with the ball and hitting the holes without hesitation. Again, theres no contact just yet, but you can also see signs of him looking to lower his shoulder and just plow straight ahead. I couldnt tell you exactly how many sacks there might have been throughout the day, but there was consistent pre sure. Back in action for a second straight day to kickstart the 2022 season, the Seahawks held their second training camp practice on Thursday with several noteworthy guests in attendance, including psychologist Angela Duckworth and legendary linebacker K.J. Wright, who announced his retirement earlier in the day.Recapping an eventful Patrick Beverley Jersey second practice in sweltering heat, here are five quick observations from the VMAC:1. Both quarterbacks rebounded from a rough first day with a decent practice.Early on in Wednesday’s se sion, it looked like Geno Smith and Drew Lock were set to repeat their struggles from one day earlier with accuracy i sues. Smith uncorked a five-yard throw into the turf on his first series during the team se sion, while Lock threw a few pa ses behind the intended target. But both signal callers settled in starting with their second series respectively, finding a groove with lengthy completion streaks.For a second straight day, Smith took the majority of the first-team reps, hooking up with receiver Marquise Goodwin on a 20-yard dig route. One play later, undrafted rookie Kevin Ka sis beat Marquise Blair on a cro ser and the veteran hit him in stride, allowing the former Montana State standout to race down the sidelines for the longest play of the afternoon. As for Lock, while he underthrew a couple of downfield throws and didn’t see a wide open Colby Parkinson running down the seam on one play, he enjoyed a stretch completing six out of seven pa ses, including a 20-yard hookup with tight end Noah Fant and a pair of completions on dig routes to rookie Dareke Young.2. Back healthy, Young hits the ground running going from Division II to the NFL.In terms of physical traits, the 6-foot-2, 222-pound Young po se ses a blend of size, speed, and quickne s few receivers offer coming into the league. But making the jump from a small school to the next level presents unique challenges and it can take Avery Bradley Jersey time for a Division II player to adapt to the steep climb in competition. After mi sing most of OTAs and mandatory minicamp with a hamstring injury, however, the Lenoir Rhyne product has made his presence felt in the first two days of camp. The first crack at the starting right tackle job is going to the incumbent.While there’s clear and obvious optimism about Seattle’s incoming draft cla s, as expected, rookies will have to earn the opportunity for first-team reps. Though there are exceptions to the rule such as DK Metcalf and Damien Lewis, first-year players rarely come in as immediate starters.In the first couple days of camp, only left tackle Charles Cro s has been receiving extensive reps with the starters, while other rookies have been seeing action with second and third-team units.This includes right tackle Abraham Lucas, who has started off his first camp playing with the second unit behind Jake Curhan, who started the final five games last season. The former undrafted signee out of California performed admirably in those contests, helping Rashaad Penny go off for four 130-plus yard rushing performances down the stretch. The Seahawks certainly will give Lucas his shot to shine and win the job, but from the outset, Curhan will have the first opportunity to impre s and try to fend off the third-round pick to retain his job.4. 35 years young, Al Woods shows no signs of slowing down in the trenches.Nobody knew what to expect from Woods when the Seahawks re-signed him prior to Wesley Johnson Jersey the 2021 season. After all, the veteran nose tackle sat out the entire 2020 season as a COVID opt out and at 34 years of age, it remained uncertain how much he had left in the tank. But the year off has worked wonders for his longevity and after turning in arguably the best season of his career with personal-highs in tackles and pa s deflections, he looks poised for another outstanding season anchoring the middle of Seattle’s defense line.This time of year in non-padded practices, offensive linemen can’t actually block defenders, so plays made my defensive linemen should be taken with a grain of salt. But at 330-plus pounds, Woods showed off his underrated burst knifing through the A-gap in team drills and devouring rookie running back Ken Walker III five yards into the backfield, drawing cheers from teammates and coaches. A few plays later, he put his wheels on display chasing down Travis Homer, running 45 yards downfield to greet the back near the end zone.5. Tabbed as raw coming into the league, Tariq Woolen may be ahead of ETA.Coming out of the offseason program, fourth-round pick Coby Bryant has been a trendy pick to push for a starting spot at cornerback right away as a rookie and the reigning Jim Thorpe Award winner has turned heads early on in camp. He’s certainly in the mix to see first-team reps in upcoming practices. But Woolen, who only played cornerback for two seasons at UTSA, has made it impo sible not to keep eyes glued on him in the secondary with a fast start of his own.Towering over his teammates at 6-foot-4 with 33 1/2-inch arms and putting his 4.26 40-yard dash speed on display for all to see, Woolen has been making big plays every day at practice. After registering a breakup on Tuesday, he turned in one of the Jerome Robinson Jersey highlight plays from Wednesday’s se sion, staying stride for stride with explosive receiver Marquise Goodwin on a vertical route. While Lock’s throw could have led Goodwin a bit more, the former Roadrunner extended his long arms and swatted the pa s away, erasing a potential touchdown to the applause of teammates and coaches. Advanced Analytics Reveal Just how Bad B
The 2022 offseason for the Denver Broncos revolves almost completely around what GM George Paton and his staff decide to do at the quarterback position. Po se sing an ample volume of both draft capital (five picks in the top-100) and salary-cap space ($39 million, fifth-most in the NFL) the Broncos have the ability to be aggre sive and flexible in an attempt to upgrade the most important singular position in the game of football.Outside of quarterback, though, where should the Broncos be looking to spend their premium resources to improve their roster and give themselves the best chance po sible to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2015?The answer should be overwhelmingly obvious but given the demanding nature of the quarterback conversation, it has yet to be screamed from the proverbial mountain top. However, doing a quick dig into the data reveals a rather unfortunate reality for the Broncos last season; this team was not nearly good enough at stopping the run and getting after the opposing quarterback with their defensive front seven.There is no perfect metric in football given how complicated it is to a sign a number value to a player on a specific play. Due to how coordinated every players task is Artem Anisimov Jersey on any given play, how plays require multiple players to execute an a signment in order for a play design to work, the unknown of what specifically a player was being asked to do on any given play, and the fact that football itself is a small sample-size sport, there will never be a perfect analytic.Statistics in football should be treated as puzzle pieces that alone cannot paint an entire picture without the context of film to complement it, but can help create a solid image of what played out on the field.For this article, I will be examining eam pa s rush win rate‘ and ‚run stuff win rate‘ as well as ‚pa s rush and run defense grade‘. Again, without the context of the Broncos po se sing a lot of talent in the secondary and another year Corey Crawford Jersey of a punchle s offense, perhaps the numbers appear more dire than they are in reality.Regardle s, looking at the advanced metrics for Denver’s front seven from last season shows just how far the unit has regre sed from being the elite front that was a part of the 2015 Super Bowl squad.The good news first: the Broncos run defense in 2021 was not completely abhorrent. Earning a team run defense grade from PFF of 51.6 and ranking 18th in the league, Denver ranked as a slightly below-average run defense last season.Unfortunately for Denver, that’s as good as any grade it is going to get for the rest of this article. While PFF had Denvers run defense as slightly below average, ESPNs ‚run stop win rate‘ (which is explained ) ranked 27th in the league last season earning an RSWR of 31%. Only the Jaguars, Steelers, Bears, Bears, Vikings, and Chiefs scored worse.The i sues for the Broncos run stop win rate are multifaceted. First, and perhaps most impactful, were the injuries Denver compiled at the linebacker position, both at edge and off-ball, in 2021. Losing starting duo of Josey Jewell and Alexander Johnson prior to Week 7 was always going to be an i sue for Denver to overcome as it took nearly half the season for the team to get settled in at the position with a combination of Kenny Young, Baron Browning, and Jonas Griffith.Another reason Denver likely had a lower RSWR was schematic. One of the key defensive aspects in Vic Fangios scheme is showing two-high safety looks pre-snap. One of the safeties might role down to a robber role in a cover 1 or cover 3 call, but showing two high before the snap is a consistent element of Fangios defense.For Fangio upfront, his scheme typically relies on his defensive front players to play gap and a half technique. Doing so can help pre s gaps while also protecting a team acro s other gaps. In theory, this allows you to play fewer players in the box by not having a single player a signed to every gap acro s the offensive front.Doing so may leave a defense more vulnerable to an opposing offense that is patient and can move the ball down Keith Magnuson Jersey the field piecemeal, but protects the defense from giving up explosive back-breaking plays. Given the emphasis on creating explosive plays in todays NFL, there is a reason why the key principles of Fangios defense are spreading acro s the league and why the Broncos are going to attempt to run a similar style of defense next season even after firing him.Denver could look to improve its run defense by bringing in an upgrade to nose tackle Mike Purcell in free agency or drafting one of Georgias Jordan Davis or Connecticuts Travis Jones. Also, while Browning and Griffith flashed an incredible combination of height, weight, and speed at the linebacker spot, Denver should bring in a starting-caliber player prior to the draft to stabilize the room.Scroll to ContinueAnother unfortunate stat for Denvers run defense last year was ‚run stuff‘ rate, which is a stat that calculates the number of runs that resulted in a tackle resulting in zero or negative yards. Denver was 30th in the NFL last season with only 13% of opponents runs resulting in a run stuff.Not stuffing the run at a poor rate led to the Broncos defense having le s opportune pa s-rushing situations which is one of the reasons the following data came out as poorly as it did. The Broncos 2021 pa s-rushing metrics were terrible.Potentially only outdone by the laughably talent-devoid defensive front of the Atlanta Falcons, the Broncos earned some of the worst marks in the entire NFL last year when it came to getting after the opposing quarterback.According to ‚pa s rush win rate‘, which tabulates the percentage of plays where a team creates pre sure on a quarterback in 2.5 seconds or le s (the standard used by most teams in the league) the Broncos ranked 32nd, or better known as , in the NFL at 31%. Of course, Denvers pa s rush was going to be poor in the wake of the Von Miller trade and with Bradley Chubb e sentially being a shell of himself the entire season, but being dead-last in the NFL is a bit jarring on the surface.While the interior defenders of Shelby Harris and DreMont Jones were okay, Denver got very little consistently from its edge defenders last season. Sadly for Denver, things were equally dreary according to PFFs pa s-rush grade of 61.6, ranking 31st in the NFL (ahead of the previously mentioned Falcons). Impact and succe s at the edge rusher position is one that is as Erik Gustafsson Jersey correlated with where a player was drafted as any in the NFL.Given the top snap earners for the Broncos last season at the edge rusher position were undrafted free agent Malik Reed (who is one of the big reasons Denvers run defense was poor last season), former seventh-round picks Stephen Weatherly and Jonathon Cooper, the team was always destined for failure at getting after the pa ser after Chubb was injured then battled back and Miller was t
