The Panthers went at it bright and early Saturday morning for the final Patrick Corbin Jersey practice of the week and they scrimmaged for nearly the entire day. This was the first real evaluation for the coaching staff and yes, us in the media too.Here are my thoughts.These numbers are unofficial, but I had Sam Darnold completing 21 of 29 pa ses with a touchdown and one interception. As for Mayfield, I had him at 13/18, also with a touchdown and a pick a piece.Darnold got the bulk of the reps with the ones and didn’t look all that sharp. He got off to a hot start completing a ball to Giovanni Ricci for a touchdown on his first pa s attempt in red zone offense but after his eighth attempt in a full field situation, he was very hesitant. As we’ve seen from Darnold in the past, he has some challenges bouncing back when something bad happens. That happened today when he forced a ball near the sideline that resulted in an interception by the newly signed Tae Hayes. He should have thrown the ball away and lived to see another down. There were two other occasions where Darnold was flushed out of the pocket and had two receivers wide open but couldn’t pull the trigger because what happened earlier Kyle Barraclough Jersey was in the back of his mind. He also held onto the ball too long on a handful of plays which either ended in a sack or an incompletion. He also had two delay of game penalties.Mayfield did have a beautiful 50-yard(ish) bomb to Rashard Higgins that went for a touchdown but other than that, he didn’t do anything exceptional. He took what the defense gave him and made smart decisions. Like every other rookie, there’s been some good and Gio Gonzalez Jersey some bad over the first two weeks. Today, he did an excellent job handling stunts and pa sing off stunts. He got better with each rep.Aside from the proven stars, I don’t know if anyone has had a better training camp on the defensive side of the ball than Myles Harstfield. He’s been all over the place breaking up pa ses, picking balls off, and flying to the ball to make tackles. Played a lot of nickel today and played it well.
A Matter of Trust
You cant blame an NFL player for getting hurt.Injuries, undeniably, are a part of the game. As Tenne see Titans coach Mike Vrabel likes to say, anyone who plays the game long enough is going to get hurt. Its that simple.Still, nearly every player will tell you that the best ability is availability. Those who find a way to play and play well despite whatever physical i sues confront them from week to week are the ones coaches and franchise officials covet because they provide a measure of certainty in a highly unpredictable industry.For the Titans in recent years, there has been no better example of that trait than center Ben Jones, who has mi sed one game in an NFL career that started back in 2012. Last season, for example, he played through knee and neck injuries and those are just the ones that were made public via the leagues official injury report.Ben does a great job of always being available, Vrabel said recently at the NFL combine. I think that whatever his level of play is, his availability and his durability is something that Ive respected the most. Just judging from the performance on the field, his durability and availability is something that I will always admire.Coaches and general managers would sleep much better at night if everyone was like Jones. But he is the exception. Instead, rosters must be built, and playbooks must be filled based on a mixture of trust and hope that certain players will be on the field and able to do Jacob DeGrom Jersey the jobs that are expected of them throughout the majority of the season.Scroll to ContinueIn some cases, that requires a serious leap of faith. Trust factor: 1 Julio Jones, wide receiver: He mi sed seven games and played just 58 percent of the snaps on offense in what was a disappointing first season with Tenne see, which included career-lows of 14.0 yards per reception and one touchdown catch. He also mi sed seven games in 2020, his final season with the Atlanta Falcons and now has gone for the first time back-to-back years without making the Pro Bowl. He turned 33 last month, which makes him one of the leagues oldest players at his position. If the franchise officials ultimately decide they cant trust him, there is salary cap relief available by releasing Jones with a post-June 1 designation. Trust factor: 2. Rashad Weaver, outside linebacker: Weaver is another member of the 2021 draft cla s who got precious little experience as a rookie. In his case, at least, he showed real promise during training camp and the preseason. Last weeks decision to sign Harold Landry to an extension means the Titans wont have to take a leap of faith with Weaver this season. The question is whether they believe he can come back from the broken leg that limited him to fewer than two games played and eventually become a regular contributor or if they have to addre s the future of the position in this years draft. Trust factor: 3. Taylor Lewan, left tackle: Coming off of reconstructive knee surgery, Lewan said he entered 2021 in the best shape of his career. Then he struggled mightily in the opener and was pulled from the Week 2 contest when he felt discomfort in the knee during pregame warmups. He mi sed one other game due to a pregame development and was inactive for one other. He is 30 years Jeurys Familia Jersey old and has played a lot of football and has played well. At this point, the Titans must wonder if he is slowing down, breaking down or both? Trust factor: 3. Kristian Fulton, cornerback: He has been in the NFL for two seasons and has spent time on injured reserve in both. He mi sed nine games with a knee injury as a rookie and three with a hamstring i sue in 2021. Even in the wake of the knee i sue, though, he entered last offseason as a starter and made franchise officials look good as he was the Titans best defensive back at the start of the season and a consistent performer when healthy throughout. Expect him to figure prominently in whatever decisions are made related to the secondary in the coming days. Trust factor: 4. Derrick Henry, running back: The foot injury that sidelined him for the final nine games of 2021 was a cold splash of reality for the entire franchise. The fact that he made it back for the postseason speaks to his recuperative abilities, which likely will be tested again in the coming years. After all, Henrys enormous workload beginning midway through 2019, likely was a contributing factor to last years injury and almost certainly will exact a toll for the remainder of his career. Henry proved last year that he actually is human, but there is also an abundance of evidence to suggest that he is no ordinary human. Trust factor: 4. A.J. Brown, wide receiver: He has led the Titans in receptions each of the last three years but has been on the injury report with a litany of ailments almost every week of the last two. He mi sed two games in 2020 and four in 2021, which included a three-game stint on injured reserve. Brown is one of those guys who does not need to feel good to play well, but as he enters the final year of his contract, there must be some concern about the cumulative effect of all of his recent Mike Piazza Jersey health i sues. To date, though, there has been no real reason to think he wont continue to be Ryan Tannehills preferred target in the pa sing game. Trust factor: 5.

Hes starting to become viewed le ser and le ser as a receiver, when in reality he is capable of going off. COSTA MESA After Monday’s day-off, the Chargers went with a non-padded practice for Day 11 of training camp. Among a noticeable absent voice at practice was head coach Brandon Staley. His youngest son, Grant, underwent toe surgery Tuesday morningto treat a fracture and po sible infection. The offense was working out of their own end, making it fairly easy for Taylor to run it back for the pick-six.On the final play of 11-on-11s, Deane Leonard had a near-interception go off his hands on a deep throw down the sideline from Easton Stick.Jamaree Salyer, who’s played almost exclusively at guard throughout OTAs and training camp, received some looks at right tackle on Tuesday. As a member of Georgia’s National Championship squad,Salyer played Matt Andriese Jersey left tackle but has been deemed a guard at the NFL level by draft experts, and the Chargers‘ staff has looked as if they agree with that sentiment based on how they’ve deployed him early on.With the reps Salyer received on the right side, he fit right in without looking out of sorts. Week 13 has two games between ranked teams with ma sive College Football Playoff implications.The first is the top-10 matchup between No. 9 Penn State and No. 2 Ohio State: The winner of that game will likely represent the Big Ten East in the conference championship game and take the driver’s seat for Playoff consideration. The other is the top-25 matchup between No. 24 Texas A&M and No. 4 Georgia: If the Aggies upset the Bulldogs in Athens, it will knock them clean out of Playoff contention.MORE: Other notable games to watch this week include the AAC matchup between Navy and SMU, as well as the ACC matchup between Pitt and Virginia Tech. A suming the winner of SMU-Navy wins its next game (against Tulane and Houston, respectively), they could conceivably make the AAC championship if Memphis loses to Cincinnati on Nov. 29. The Midshipmen lead the country in rushing (349 yards per game) by way of their triple-option attack, while SMU ranks 30th Bartolo Colon Jersey in rush defense (124 ypg). It will be close, but the backfield duo of Shane Buechele (3,195 pa sing yards, 28 touchdowns, eight interceptions) and Xavier Jones (1,063 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns) should lead the Mustangs to a hard-fought win.Pick: SMU 35, Navy 34MORE: UCLA at USC (-13.5)This rivalry game means little in the grand scheme of things, both in the Pac-12 and larger national football landscape, but it is a curious game considering the implications for Trojans coach Clay Helton. The fifth-year USC coach has been on the hot seat for most of the season, and theres no guarantee a win against the 4-6 Bruins will be enough to secure his return for the 2020 season. USCs Kedon Slovis and UCLAs Dylan Thompson-Robinson should both put up big numbers, but look for the overall-better Trojans to come away with a win.Pick: USC 33, UCLA 27No. 12 Michigan (-8.5) at IndianaMichigan cant afford to look ahead to The Game next week not with this 7-3 Indiana team. The Hoosiers have lost 23 straight in this series, but have played the Wolverines to one-po se sion games in three of their last four trips to Bloomington. Indiana backup quarterback Peyton Ramsey stepped right into injured Michael Penix Jr.s shoes against Penn State last week, completing 31 of 41 pa ses for 371 yards and a touchdown. Michigan would rather its defense keep him off balance for the entirety of this game, but the progre sion of Shea Patterson the last three weeks (43 of 67 pa sing, 635 yards, seven touchdowns, zero interceptions) bodes well if this game stays close late. We gue s the Wolverines will pull away midway through the fourth quarter.Pick: Michigan 30, Indiana 21Pitt at No. 25 Virginia Tech (-4)This game, coupled with next weeks rivalry matchup between Virginia and Virginia Tech, will likely decide which team faces Clemson in the ACC championship game. If Pitt wins out and Virginia Tech beats Virginia next week, the Panthers will play the Tigers in Charlotte, N.C. for the ACC title. If the Hokies win out, theyll get that honor. This game could pivot on Kenny Picketts ball security: Pitt is 4-1 in games in which he doesnt register an interception, and 2-2 in games he does. The Hokies have 12 interceptions on the season as a team, including three players (Caleb Farley, Dax Hollifield and Jermaine Waller) with at least three picks. The Hokies get at least one takeaway in a close win.Pick: Virginia Tech 27, Pitt 23MORE: Texas at No. 13 Baylor (-5)A Baylor win will ensure the Bears rematch with Oklahoma for a chance at the Big 12 championship, but Baylor may have bigger things in mind: Matt Rhule and Co. still have an outside chance at becoming the No. 4 seed in the Playoff a suming Baylor wins out and avenges its only lo s of the season. That might be too tall an order, but Rhule will have his team ready to Shawn Kelley Jersey play after the heartbreaking lo s to the Sooners, who overcame a 25-point deficit to upend the Bears. That said, Texas hasnt scored more than 27 points in four of its last five games (the one exception a 50-48 win over Kansas). That doesnt bode well against a Bears defense that has given up 22.6 points per game in Big 12 play this season. Baylor rights the ship before moving on to Kansas and a rematch with Oklahoma.Pick: Baylor 31, Texas 27No. 24 Texas A&M at No. 4 Georgia (-13.5)Texas A&M represent what is likely the last true regular-season road block between Drew Smyly Jersey Georgia and a College Football Playoff berth. The Aggies have won their last four games with a plus-81 win differential, while Georgia has had to slog through one-po se sion victories over Auburn and Florida (sandwiched around a 27-0 win over Mi souri). The Bulldogs have gotten by on the strength of their defense this season, allowing only South Carolina to score more than 17 points this season (20). The challenge for them will be to limit Aggies quarterback Kellen Mond, whose dual-threat ability can cause headaches for Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning. Mond will make a few plays, but look for Jake Fromm to continue playing mistake-free football (he hasnt thrown an interception in over a month) in another Georgia win.Pick: Georgia 30, Texas A&M 20No. 9 Penn State at No. 2 Ohio State (-18.5)Penn State represents the first of a three-game gauntlet separating Ohio State from its first Playoff berth since 2016. The Buckeyes will be happy to have Chase Young back along the defensive line. He should be a huge disruptor in Penn States backfield, not only for Sean Cliffords ability to target KJ Hamler and Pat Freiermuth, but also running back Journey Browns ability to make positive gains. Conversely, Shake Toney and Yetur Gro s-Matos will look to make life miserable for Justin Fields. This game will be closer than the -point spread, but Fields dual-threat ability, coupled with the running prowe s of J.K. Dobbins, should be enough for Ohio State to keep Penn State at arms l
